Poetry Festival Reflection & Upcoming Events

Dear Mother Nature, please save the snow for next year! In Wisconsin, we’ve had an interesting spring. It’s still snowing off and on. I think my tulips and daffodils are perplexed, as am I!

I had the honor of teaching a writing workshop last week for the Jax Poetry Festival that is running throughout the month of April. The topic was, “Free Verse: Unleash Your Inner Poet." About 18 people attended and we had great participation. I really enjoyed hearing poetry from the group and I hope they keep in touch! I’m excited at the prospect of doing this more in the future and for this organization next year. The festival is really well run and has a lot of interesting teachers. It’s not too late to sign up for the remaining sessions.

One of the Jax Poetry Festival sessions that I attended was by Chris Kastle, a folk singer/songwriter from St. Augustine, FL, who encouraged us to write a song. I chose one of my poems to start from, and yesterday, I completed the first draft of the song that also included music! I love how the recent rock camp and this workshop worked together to further my art. It’s certainly a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to having more jam sessions with my music friends in the near future. My goals for outreach this year are coming to fruition and I’m very excited about what is yet to come in 2023!

I’m really looking forward to two events I have in May. The first is at the Sun Prairie Public Library on May 8 at 6 p.m. It’s a book club discussion on my latest book of poetry, The End of the Beginning. I’d love to see you and there are a few slots left so be sure to sign up. I’ll be divulging some secrets of the poems so you won’t want to miss it! Click here to register.

The last book talk I have planned is on May 17 at Mystery to Me Bookstore at 6 p.m. You can attend in person or via the Crowdcast link. I’ll be joined with my friend and fellow local poet Shahayra Majumder. We will be reading our poetry followed by an open discussion.

I don’t know when I’ll have another book talk or club chat beyond these two events, so if you’ve been on the fence about coming to see me, this would be a good opportunity. It’s also a good time to buy a book or two for your mom for Mother’s Day! Click here to purchase The End of the Beginning and click here to purchase The Liminal Space.

Here’s hoping Spring finds us!

Let’s chat soon.

With affection,

Carrie VS
